50 Mile Time Trial

The weather was unfavourable to the Caesarean Cycling Club for the fifth week in succession on Sunday, for at 7 o’clock when the first rider was due to start the 50 Mile Time Trial the rain started and only eight riders reported to the time keeper. Of these four were visitors keeping fit by riding in this event. Unfortunately due to the inclement weather during the week they had not been able to ride over the course, and only one visitor completed the event with out going off course.

The first to return to the time keeper was J Dods, a member of the De Laune C.C with the good time of 2 hrs 13 minutes 26 seconds, but he had gone off course and only completed about 48 miles. The next in was D Ecobichon followed by M Sallai. J Tanswell just back from holidays without his bike, found the going hard, as also veteran W.Aubert. Only D Hudson a member of the Becontree Wheelers did not go off course and finished in second place.

While the seniors were busy riding the 50 Miles, the juniors and ladies rode a 10 mile Time Trial. Ten riders started and Miss R Grant rode a very good race, Miss C Liron, riding in only her second event tried very hard. D Lidster the fastest junior this season, won the event with a very good time. The battle between K de la Haye and D Le Brocq continued with K de la Haye winning and taking second place and promising to be a force to be reckoned with next season was A Le Rossignol, closely challenged by G Callec, G Bisson riding his first event did very well and with training should improve.

50 Mile Race

Yesterday morning the Caesarean Cycling Club held a 50 mile mass start race over a 12 lap circuit in the Gorey, St Catherine area. Winner of the event Don Ecobichon, who won by 43 seconds from J.Dods, an English competitor from London.
Three other English clubmen rode, D Lockley, M Castle and D Ryecroft, the latter having the misfortune to get a puncture, but after a quick change of his front tubular he made a gallant attempt to rejoin the leaders.
It was not until the third lap, durning the steep climb on the hill leading from the end of the pine walks to St Martins Main road that D Ecobichon and J Does pulled away from the remaining riders to build up a lead of just over one minute.
After five laps the club’s Junior riders were introduced into the event at just over one minute down on the leaders, but the fast moving trio of D Lidster, D Le Brocqand and K de la Haye were quick to close the gap.
Among the juniors a sprint finish developed between the powerful D Lidster and the small wiry D Le Brocq, but it was the latter’s try all the way tactics that won the day.
K de la Haye who filled third position, would do well to take a leaf out of D Le Brocq’s book and not give up trying when the going becomes hard.

50 Mile Time Trial

Out of eight entries for the 50 Mile event only 5 braved the rain on Sunday morning. Non starters were J Tanswell, R Liot and W. Aubert. Times were expected to be slow owing to the poor weather conditions but Don Ecobichon proved this wrong by clocking 2 hrs 15 mins 20 secs the fastest time of the day. Four of the five riders finished. D. Cook retiring after a long and painful ride with scars as proof of the slippery roads.

Given a good morning all Sundays riders should improve on their times in the next 50 Mile Time Trial.

LADIES AND JUNIORS

The ladies and juniors also braved the weather to ride a six mile Time Trial starting from West Park proceeding to St Aubin’s and back again. The slippery roads also claimed three more victims, Miss C Liron, Miss S Harrington and A Richardson. D Lidster once again had the fastest time of the morning beating K de la Haye and D le Brocq, his closest rival. Le Marquand showed improvement by finishing fifth and taking first handicap prize. G.Cornillet a new rider took the second handicap prize.

Miss R.Grant gained first place in the ladies beating Miss S.Harrington by 1 min 46 secs, Miss C.Liron performed well in her first race.

Thanks are due to all the marshals who turned out in such foul weather and also the the time-keeper G.Reed and the recorder Miss P.Moody
