Race Report
On Sunday the sporting club Francais held a round-the-Island cycle race against a team from the Caesarean Cycling Club. The course some 45 miles in length was one covered previously by the French club, but was new to the Caesarean cyclists and proved to be both a tough and difficult one.
An outstanding performance was put up by the winner, Don Ecobichon of the C.C.C, who led the field for three-quarters of the way and broke the existing S.C.F record for the course by 8.5 minutes. Caesarean Cycling Club riders filled the next three places all of them inside the previous best time set by the Sporting Club Francais.
Under Two Hours
The race began at 8 o’clock in the morning at Le Hocq with five cyclists from each club in the saddle. Riding clockwise around the Island, the competitors began to separate noticeably at Mont Le Vaux, St.Aubin, when D.Ecobichon drew away, never to be overhauled. He completed the course and passed the finishing line at Le Hocq in a time of 1 hour 50 minutes 30 seconds.
In second place came a junior rider of the (C.C.C), D.Lidster with a time of 1 hr 54 mins 15 secs, and third, 25 seconds behind him was D.Le Brocq. In fourth place was G.Clark, also of the (C.C.C) who equalled the previous best of the course. Then in three seconds over the two hours came A.Civy, of the (S.C.F.) He had suffered lost time through a slight mechanical trouble on the Five Mile Road. Sixth was the veteran of the field, A.Le Gros (S.C.F) who returned the fine time of 2 hrs 9 mins 40 secs and last to compete the course was X Denouel courageously keeping going to the end.
ACCIDENT
K.de la Haye (C.C.C) dropped out of the race after about 30 miles as did A.Cornec (S.C.F) after an accident at Greve de Lecq. The fifth (S.C.F) rider a newcomer to cycle racing. A Bouffau dropped out at St Aubin. The winner average speed of 24.5 miles per hour was remarkable not only because of the strenuous nature of the course but also because the roads were made dangerous when rain soaked the riders along the whole of the north coast to Rozel.
