First 24 Hour Trial

Local cycling history was made over the weekend by the Caesarean Cycling Club with the successful staging of a 24 Hour trial, the first held in Jersey. The trial started at 6 pm on Saturday and ended on Sunday at 6 pm, the riders except for very short breaks for refreshments and massage, riding continuously over a course extending from St Aubin's to Gorey and back along the coast road. The trial was won by 18 year old G Audoire who covered 372.5 miles in the specified time at an average speed of 15.52 m.p.h. This feat is made all the more remarkable when it is realized that the entrants had to negotiate the climbs at Mount Bingham on each lap. G Audoire has just completed his first season in the senior ranks and he crowns a most successful debut with a major triumph. In second place was J Wardle completing 357 miles at an average of 14.875 m.p.h. Unfortunately this rider lost many valuable miles by having to stop to repair a puncture. The veteran of the club W Aubert came in third completing 304 miles at an average speed of 12.66 m.p.h. Although there were four entrants and they all completed the trial, the fourth man home being G Ching a newcomer to the CCC. He covered 264 miles at an average speed 11 m.p.h. The actual finish of the trial wa at Coronation Park, Millbrook where a big crowd gave the riders a rousing reception as they came in. All the members of the club cooperated in the holding of this trial being on duty in various capacities throughout the night and yesterday. It is interesting to note that the winner G Audoire completed the St Aubin's-Gorey and back course 16 times in the 24 Hours.
