Round the Island Time Trial

The Caesarean Cycling Club's 31.5 mile round the Island time trial is rather a hilly one and consists of a start at Millbrook along the coast to Gorey then along the north of the Island via the parish churches of St Martin, Trinity, St John and St Mary to St Ouen's Parish Hall and back via the Five Mile Road and St Aubin's. The morning Sunday was fine for the event though there was a northerly wind to hamper the riders. The senior event was won by Edward Le Huquet from John Richardson. The latter was first man off, two minutes later Le Huquet left and caught Richardson at Trinity. A battle ensued between these two until La Pulente where Richardson was dropped on the hill. Donald Ecobichon won the junior event and added another record to his ever-growing list, his time being nearly four minutes under the record held by Graeme Audoire since 1954, Ecobichon's times equal to that of Richardson and only six seconds separated B Hubert from these riders. A new junior is D Le Roux who started his time trialing career with this event, by no means the easiest to put up a creditable performance. J Wardle improved this week and finished only four minutes behind the winner's time and claimed the handicap prize by a good margin, also a personal best. Sally Gueno was the only lady competitor and this also was her first round the Island trial. It was with considerable disappointment that club members heard of the accident which befell club champion Wally Rowe last week. This has necessitated the amputation of his little finger of his right hand. Wally was permitted to go home and when visited appeared well and spoke of his chances of getting back to cycle racing as soon as possible.
