BMRT Take the Honours…

Big Maggy’s Race Team Take the Honours at Jersey Cycling National Championship Round the Bays.

The Jersey Cycling Association National Championship Round the Bays road race took place on an adapted course this year, with ongoing roadworks necessitating a change to the traditional route.

Organisers CCC opted for a Bal Tab finish after four westerly hills, which was well received by competitors.

The race was held in challenging conditions, with a strong south-westerly wind and damp weather making for a demanding morning of racing. Despite the less favourable forecast, more than 20 riders took to the start line to contest the championship titles.

It was a successful day for Big Maggy’s Race Team, with Sam Nisbet taking the overall men’s victory and Florence Thomas claiming the women’s championship.

Nisbet worked with Rebours coming out of St Brelade, until he attacked on the corner going into L’Etacq, this creating over a 3 minute break. Sam was followed home by CCC riders Jack Rebours and then Ollie Hamon, who completed the overall men’s podium. Adam Wojtkiewicz was fourth overall and took the Senior Vet championship.

In the Women’s Championship, Florence Thomas took the title ahead of BMRT teammate Lydia Barratt. Flo ended up working hard on her own for a large part of the race, but joined together with others to work together for part of the Bal Tab finish. Natalie Sullivan, finished third and claimed the Women’s Senior Vet championship, ahead of fellow rider Claire Forbes.

The Grand Vet championship was won by CCC rider John Taylor, who finished just ahead of Hugh Cathcart of VSJ in the sprint finish.

The event provided a challenging test for riders across all categories, with the combination of wind and damp conditions adding to the demands of the adapted Round the Bays course.

The next road race on the JCA calendar is the Inter-Insular Watersplash Circuit, which takes place on Sunday 16 August. We’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch or just sign up when the entries are out through CCC.

The Jersey Cycling Association thanks CCC for organising the event and adapting the course to accommodate the roadworks, as well as the officials, marshalls and all riders who supported the championship race.
