30 Mile Hougue Bie “Nick the Demon” Handicap

30 Mile "Nick the Demon" held on the Hougue Bie Circuit. In this type of race the riders start at varying times and if the handicapping committee have done a good job they riders should all finish in a bunch. The first man off was D.Le Roux at two minutes past nine and he was followed by other riders at intervals until 9.14 when the scratch man S.Perchard got away. The Hougue Bie circuit takes an anti-clockwise direction past Princes Tower, Faldouet, St. Martin's Church, Maufant and past Fairview Farm about four and a half miles . By the end of the second lap it was seen that the faster men Perchard and Ecobichon had linked up and were working together to catch up with the rest of the field. Also riding in the bunch were J.Richardson, G.Laurent and M.Machon. While taking the bend at Hougue Bie Richardson was forced on to a patch of mud and lost control taking a nasty fall. Machon following close behind was unable to avoid the fallen rider and also became unseated. The race continued with the slower riders gradually being overhauled and at the end of the fifth lap the field was split into two major groups with a gap of 1 minute 18 seconds between them and with only one lap left to reduce the deficiency. As the riders approached the finishing line it was apparent the it had worked out according to the book for in the final sprint only two seconds separated the first six competitors.
