30 Mile Mass Start

(D.Ecobichon Wins by Inches) Starting on the Five Mile Road the Caesarean Cycling Club held a 30 Mile mass start event. Ten competitors out of the original 13 entries slowly inched their way up to the starting line ready to get away at the drop of of the starter's flag. D.Ecobichon and Audoire were away to a good lead to be joined with B.Hubert who missed a chance at the beginning. At the completion of the first lap those three had opened up a cap between themselves and the next two riders, Malcolm Machon and Guy Laurent who in turn were leading the main bunch by 20 seconds. They continued to set a very fast pace , especially Ecobichon and Hubert, but Audoire was forced to retire at the end of the second lap. So the pattern of the race was set with the second pair dropping back and joining the main bunch round the two and a half mile circuit, with a very strong wind to face up the straight and onto the back road. Thus it continued with a couple more retirements until the last lap. As the leading pair approached the finish the judges took up their positions. Content to wait for Hubert to start sprinting Ecobichon finally jumped into the lead to cross the line a second ahead. With the winning pair home interest mounted as to who would take the third position. As they came along the home striaght it could be seen that out of the bunch of six riders J. Richardson and A.de Gruchy had sprinted ahead. Youth was to tell for at the line a junior de Gruchy got the verdict by inches.
