35 Mile Massed Start

Race Report

Donald Ecobichon winner of Wednesdays Liberation Day Grand Prix triumphed again last Sunday when he beat top English rider B. Witcomb into a thrilling sprint finish.

Sundays race although comparatively short was over a gruelling course which the riders had to cover twice. From St Aubin’s via the Five Mile Road, Le Pulec Hill, Vincheles, St Mary’s Chapel and St Peter’s Valley.

Small Field

Only five senior riders started at St Aubin’s and they kept together until the 5 mile road, where they were joined by three junior riders. This was because junior riders are not allowed to ride in events over 30 miles, so they start with the seniors when there are 30 miles of the senior race to go.

No one was surprised when the eight riders split up on L Pulec Hill, because good riders always try to make their break on the hill. After the hill the race had a more open field with long gaps between the riders which lengthened on the second lap.

The Finish

Donald Ecobichon and B Witcomb finished a minute in front of D le Brocq and K de la Haye, who although technically competing in a different event sprinted it out for the finish. Three minutes behind came S Perchard who just out sprinted W Rowe who had had the misfortune to go off course earlier in the race. Still later at seven minutes and 15 seconds respectively came J Callec and A Richardson.
