Race Report
Sam Firby overcame a 5 second deficit to win the first Caesarean Cycling Club race of the season at the Frank Machon circuit at Les Quennevais last weekend. After chasing down Velo Sport `Jersey riders Jamie Barker and Mark Nicol, who established a 50 second lead over the main field half way through the one hour race, Firby left nothing to chance in the final sprint to take line honours.
The three had worked together until – with three laps to go – they lapped the remains of the peloton, which had earlier been depleted by a crash on the first bend of the circuit.
This signalled the end of CCC rider Danny Le Marquand’s aspirations as well as two others with mechanical problems who were never able to re-catch the group.
Nicol finished in second while Barker, who had a puncture on the last lap, rode in way down in third place. CCC’s Alistair can lead a tight finish for the minor placings from Andy Hamon and Steve Greig.
