Hamon Crowned King of the Bays!
Race Report
Island Games silver medalist Andy Hamon won the round the bays road race on Sunday, finishing just under a minute ahead of the field.
In perfect racing conditions, Velo’s Hamon led the way in this gruelling event.
Starting at West Park, the 30 riders headed for the first climb of Ghost Hill, where the initial attacks took place. Hamon screamed up the hill leaving everyone in his wake. CCC’s Danny Le Marquand and VSJ’s Marc Nicol giving chase.
The pack sped through St Brelades Bay, Chapel Hill, Corbiere and the Five Mile Road as everyone came together for the climb of L’Etacq, where Hamon and VSJ’s Adam Metcalf attacked. Hamon kept the pace high and as the pack lined out behind him, gaps began to open. With the race split, Hamon headed into Greve De Lecq the lone rider as Le Marquand and Nicol battled again to stay in touch.
Meanwhile in other categories, VSJ’s riders were leading the way. Dave Le Breton was driving the main group of pursuers and had a clear lead in the Veteran’s class. While at the other end of the age scale, junior Richard Tanguy attacked and dropped his brother Andre at L’Etacq. Ruth Bonney headed her group (of men) over the steep climb.
Through Mourier Valley and on to Bonne Nuit and Boulay Bay Hamon extended his advantage on Le Marquand and Nicol to over a minute.
As the chasing pack broke up with every climb only to regroup on the flat, this along with the increasing pace and heat, eventually took its toll as riders started to drift out the back.
The climbs, of Rozel, Fliquet and St Catherine’s set up the finale for the run in through Queens Valley and the finish at Hougue Bie. Hamon realising he wasn’t to be caught, eased up slightly to cross the line just under a minute ahead of Nicol and Le Marquand.
A further minute adrift was CCC’s Ali Cann, who took the bunch sprint for four with Le Breton taking the Veteran’s race. VSJ’s Kevin Mahony, fresh from competing in the Island Games Triathlon, had an excellent race to finish inside the top ten. While Richard Tanguy rode with team mates Ian Hamon and Mark Alsop to maintain his advantage over brother Andre to take the Junior prize. Bonney completed her first outing on this course to win the Ladies race.
Velo Sport Jersey thanked the Parish Constables for their supporting making this event possible.
