Race Report
The Caesarean Cycling Club ran the annual 13 lap “Round the Pond” massed start race yesterday. Straight from the drop of the flag a fast pace was set and on completion of one lap a breakaway group was already 30 seconds ahead. The group consisting of G.Audoire, D.Ecobichon and S.Perchard were working like a well drilled pursuit team and were unlikely to be caught.
After 3 laps the juniors were started with the trailing senior riders, but were still unable to reduce the lead of the breakaways.
The pattern of the race changed very little until the 12th lap when S.Perchard was tailed off on the Five Mile Road leaving G.Audoire and D.Ecobichon to sprint it out for top honours. The judges verdict by only inches went to Don Ecobichon.
The sprint in the juniors was once again a good one. With 200 yards to go D.Le Brocq shoot into the lead, D.Lidster challenged but K.de la Haye come through fast on the outside and won by half a length from D.Le Brocq.
Although Lidster’s performance in Time Trails is well above his nearest junior rivals he seems unable in mass start racing to perform so well. This is not an uncommon occurrence in cycling but it is a fault which he should set out to correct.
