Safeguarding

Cycling should be a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

At the Jersey Cycling Association, we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of children, young people, and adults at risk within our community. Safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and every individual involved in the sport plays a vital role.

To report any concerns please contact – safeguarding@jerseycycling.je if you believe someone is in immediate danger, CALL 999!

Alternatively for local reporting please contact – Safeguarding Partnership Jersey

We are dedicated to embedding safeguarding practices throughout our association. All of our volunteers undergo enhanced DBS checks, and our Safeguarding Officer regularly updates their knowledge to ensure best practices are followed across the association. While we are proud of the progress we’ve made, we recognise that there is always room for improvement, and we are continuously exploring new ways to enhance our safeguarding efforts.

How Members, Parents, and Guardians Contribute to a Safe Environment

Creating a safe and positive environment for everyone involved in cycling is a collective responsibility. While Jersey Cycling works hard to implement safeguarding policies and practices, members, parents, and guardians also play a crucial role in ensuring safety at all times. Here are some of the ways you can help:

1. Respecting Boundaries:

Riders, parents, and guardians are encouraged to maintain appropriate boundaries with children, young people, and vulnerable adults. It is important to foster an environment of mutual respect, where everyone feels safe and valued. This means supporting coaches and volunteers in maintaining professional relationships and ensuring respectful communication at all times.

2. Supporting Safe Participation:

Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that young participants are ready and prepared for cycling activities. This includes providing appropriate gear, such as helmets, gloves and suitable clothing, but also ensuring that participants are physically able to take part in sessions or events. All riders should also be mindful of their own actions, modelling positive behaviour that promotes safety and well-being.

3. Monitoring Behaviour:

Parents and guardians are encouraged to actively engage with their children’s cycling activities. This includes monitoring their behaviour and providing guidance on how to treat others with respect and kindness. We also ask parents to remain aware of their child’s interactions with others, ensuring that they are part of a healthy, supportive environment.

4. Open Communication:

We encourage open communication between parents, guardians, coaches and volunteers. If there are any concerns about a child’s welfare or well-being, it’s important that these are raised as soon as possible. To do this please contact safeguarding@jerseycycling.je . Riders should also be proactive in reporting any concerns they may have about safeguarding, ensuring that potential issues are addressed promptly and effectively.

5. Promoting Good Practice:

Everyone, regardless of age, has a role in promoting good practice within the cycling community. This means treating all participants with respect, displaying fair play, and supporting a positive atmosphere. For younger members, this includes learning how to interact with others in a friendly and respectful manner, while adults and older participants should lead by example, reinforcing these values in their behaviour and interactions. By fostering a culture of mutual respect and kindness, we help ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and supportive environment.

6. Attending Safeguarding Training:

We encourage all parents, guardians, and members of affiliate clubs to participate in safeguarding training, to help them better understand the practices and responsibilities involved in keeping all participants safe. Being informed helps ensure that the right steps are taken in the event of any concerns arising. By working together, we can help foster a safe, supportive environment where everyone can enjoy cycling and reach their potential, free from harm.

Confidentiality and Safe Practices

At Jersey Cycling, we take confidentiality seriously and ensure that any information related to safeguarding concerns is handled with the utmost care and respect. We are committed to protecting the privacy of all individuals involved in the association, and any information shared during safeguarding processes will be treated confidentially, in line with legal requirements.

In addition to confidentiality, conducting thorough risk assessments is vital in maintaining a safe environment. These assessments help us identify potential hazards before they arise and ensure that appropriate measures are in place to prevent accidents or injuries. By regularly reviewing and updating our risk assessments, we ensure that all activities, whether on or off the bike, are as safe as possible for participants of all ages and abilities.

Finally, providing correct facilities—from safe routes to well-maintained equipment and appropriate amenities—supports the overall safety and well-being of everyone involved. Ensuring that all venues and locations meet safety standards, including toilets & Normandy Rescue for first aid cover, further reinforces our commitment to creating a secure & safe environment for all participants.
